Friday’s Market Report: Tech & Communications Suffer, Services Hold

Tech & Communications: A Tale of Woe

The midday sun cast a shadow over the Technology & Communications sector on Friday, as investors witnessed a 1.0% decline, sending ripples of concern through the market. Super Micro Computer Inc. (SMCI) and NVIDIA Corp (NVDA) emerged as the harbingers of despair, with losses of 19.6% and 6.2%, respectively. Within the realm of technology ETFs, the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) bore the brunt, down 1.3% for the day, though clinging to a 0.95% year-to-date uptick. Surprisingly, Super Micro Computer Inc. defied the odds, soaring 162.79% year-to-date, while NVIDIA Corp boasted a respectable 60.39% climb in the same period. As if in a dance of discord, these two entities together constitute roughly 4.9% of the XLK holdings, a fact that did little to assuage the sector’s pain.

Services Sector Soldiers On

While the Technology & Communications sector grappled with a dark narrative, the Services sector stood as a stark contrast, proudly demonstrating a 0.2% gain. Amidst the triumph, notable figures such as Netflix Inc. (NFLX) and Meta Platforms Inc. (META) bore witness to losses, marking a decline of 8.5% and 3.4%, respectively. Turning the lens to ETFs, the iShares U.S. Consumer Services ETF (IYC) showed resiliency, down a mere 0.9% in midday trading, while touting a 0.99% year-to-date climb. Netflix Inc. emerged as a beacon of hope, with a 14.71% year-to-date rise, whereas Meta Platforms Inc. sparkled with a 37.16% surge in the same period. NFLX’s commanding presence in the IYC holdings at 3.9% underscored its influence within the sector.
