Market Analysis: S&P 500 and Nasdaq Breakouts Signal Potential Overbought Levels Market Analysis: S&P 500 and Nasdaq Breakouts Signal Potential Overbought Levels

Strong Breakouts Challenge Bearish Thesis

Slowly but surely, the bearish argument presented back in April is fading away. The recent market trajectory has seen solid breakouts for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, while the Russell 2000 still has hurdles to clear.

S&P 500 Breakout

The S&P 500 witnessed a decisive breakout accompanied by increased volume accumulation. This move has technicians smiling, eagerly anticipating what comes next as the market works to validate this upward momentum.

Historic Overboughtness

An interesting dynamic to monitor is the S&P 500’s relationship with its 200-day Moving Average (MA). Currently residing at a 12.2% premium to this key metric, the index finds itself in the 10% extreme zone of historical overbought conditions. A move to 14.4% would trigger a 5% overbought level, and at 18.1%, the index would hit the 1% overbought territory, signaling a strong ‘sell’ signal looming on the horizon.

Nasdaq Breakout

As for the Nasdaq, its breakout was fueled by a notable surge in buying volume. This surge was complemented by an uptick in relative performance compared to the S&P index, indicating a strong show of strength.

Russell 2000 Challenge

The Russell 2000 ($IWM) is currently grappling with a challenge to surpass its ‘bull trap’ and break out of its trading range. While buying volume has increased, it did not experience the same fervor as witnessed with the Nasdaq breakout. Technical indicators are positive, but momentum has not yet reached overbought levels, leaving room for further upside potential.

Strategic Caution

With the S&P 500 and Nasdaq registering breakouts, investors must remain vigilant for potential ‘bull traps’ while also keeping a close watch on how far these indices stray from their 200-day MAs, remembering the vulnerability they faced during the April correction.
