Rivian Follows In Tesla's Footsteps, Reportedly Drops Key Fob With New R1 Deliveries

Rivian’s Shift Away from Key Fobs Echoes Tesla’s Evolution

Rivian Adopts New Approach to Access with Latest R1 Deliveries

California-based electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive RIVN has stirred the automotive world by reportedly discontinuing the provision of key fobs to new customers. Instead, recipients of Rivian’s latest vehicles must now rely on either a key card or the companion mobile app for access, unlocking, and driving.

An Industry Shake-Up: The shift was highlighted when a Rivian guide informed a new customer that the key fob was no longer part of the delivery package. Customers have the option to acquire the key fob separately from Rivian’s Gear Shop at a later stage. However, the key fob is currently unavailable for purchase from the gear shop.

Rivian has not issued an immediate response to the request for comment made by Benzinga.

Accessing Vehicles Differently:

Previously, Rivian provided new vehicle owners with both key cards and a key fob. The key card, about the size of a credit card, utilizes NFC technology for vehicle access. To lock or unlock the vehicle and initiate driving, customers simply need to touch the card to the door handle and interior, respectively.

For added convenience, customers can leverage the Rivian App on their smartphones to interact with and control their vehicles.

The Significance: Rivian’s move echoes a wider trend within the automotive industry. Notably, Tesla cars also no longer include key fobs in the initial purchase package. Interested customers can opt to purchase a key fob separately from Tesla’s online store for an additional $175.
