As Chinese stocks rallied today, the market exuded renewed optimism driven by reports of Beijing’s support measures, aiming to lift the stock market after a protracted downturn.
The surge saw China’s own stock market indexes rise significantly, with the Shanghai Composite gaining 3.2%, the Shenzhen Component Index climbing by 6.2%, and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong soaring by 4%.

Chinese stocks finally get a break
The surge comes after years of decline fueled by Beijing’s tech sector crackdown, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a sluggish economic recovery. This has caused foreign investors to shun Chinese stocks, leading to significantly undervalued valuations across the sector.
Amid this, U.S.-listed Chinese tech stocks such as Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA), PDD Holdings (NASDAQ: PDD), and JD.com (NASDAQ: JD) have emerged as notable gainers. As of 11:37 a.m. ET, these stocks were up 4%, 4.3%, and 7% respectively.
The winners and losers
Alibaba, a symbol of China’s crackdown on the tech sector, has faced regulatory hurdles, a major fine, and intense competition. Its recent decision to halt the spin-off of its cloud computing business due to U.S. CHIPS Act restrictions further adds to its challenges. On the other hand, PDD Holdings, which owns Pinduoduo and Temu, has shown resilience with robust revenue growth, challenging Alibaba and JD.com. JD.com, with its sluggish growth and narrow international exposure, has struggled to compete against aggressive competitors like Pinduoduo and ByteDance.
Can Chinese stocks keep gaining?
Though today’s rally is promising, sustained recovery for Chinese stocks remains uncertain. Alibaba and JD.com’s low price-to-earnings ratios of around 10 may not signify much if investor confidence in China remains weak amid sluggish growth rates. The upcoming quarterly earnings report from Alibaba will shed more light on the sector’s trajectory.
While today’s gains are a welcome relief for Chinese stocks and investors, it remains to be seen whether this upward momentum can be sustained in the long term.
